Search for the hero inside the Stoop

BBQ magazine hosted its BBQ Hero event at Harlequins rugby club, with Premiership players cooking off against each other to grill the best steak sandwich, as the Twickenham Stoop invited supporters for an open day at the ground.

The crowd were fed by the Traeger grill team, with the menu, created by Kirsty Redden, consisting of beef shin braised in beer, cinnamon and ancho chillies served on tacos, low and slow pulled pork sliders, smoked cream cheese with cowboy candy, and Traeger smoked wings.

England prop Joe Marler, who recently announced his international retirement after 95 caps, paired up with fellow Quins prop Jordan Els from South Africa to take on former England scrum-half Danny Care (101 caps) and fellow Quins No 9 Lewis Gjaltema from New Zealand in the battle of the steak sandwich to be crowned the club’s BBQ Hero.

The backs drew the rib eye steak and the forwards the rump steak for the competition, with the contestants judged on time, taste and entertainment, under the watchful eyes of Ian Jones from BBQ magazine, and presenter and Harlequins host Laura Barraclough, with Care and Gjaltema emerging victorious.
